I predicted correctly!! Emu hatched first. He made his first crack in the egg around 4:15pm. I can hear him pecking inside but no more cracks yet. Who's the true mother now?! Take a look-Click on the link below: |

As of 11:15, I have gotten confirmation that are chicks are soon on their way...
I was getting kinda worried so I was going to candle them today and as soon as I picked one of the eggs up (Emu) he began peeping at me!!!!!
Then I checked one of the smaller eggs (Gala) and she "kicked." It is so amazing to hold them and know they are doing well.
It's only a matter of time! Once one chick breaks through, I have been told, the rest will follow suit. We should see something very, very soon!
Prediction: I think Emu will be the first to hatch!! He is the biggest egg and seems to be the leader because he is making so much noise- lots of peeps. It's as if he's saying to the others, "Come on, Guys...let's GO!!"

Two of our caterpillars have reached "the point of no return."
Once a caterpillar is ready to start forming a chrysalis, they hang upside down and begin to curl their head up towards their tail. I call this the "hanging J" stage because they look like the letter J.
One of the caterpillars is still on the bottom of the cup... it's not looking so good for that fellow. You never know...he may surprise us within the next 24 hours. He may begin making his way to the top... but only if the other caterpillar gets out of his way!!!! |

The eggs have been moved to the bottom of the incubator so that the chicks can peck their way out of the egg onto a soft towel. The chicks will stay in the incubator until their feathers are dry and fluffy. Then they will be moved into a box with a heat lamp, food, and water. |

With one day to go until the chick eggs hatch, we are getting very excited!!! The eggs have been removed from the automatic egg turner and placed on a towel in the bottom of the incubator. I wonder which egg will hatch first? I am posting a picture of how the adult chickens will look- they are Australorp chickens so they will grow up to be black feathered. Will the babies be born with black feathers too? We'll have to wait and see! |
