  • "Student Safety - Parent Letter"
    November 18, 2014
    Dear Oaks Elementary Parents:

We always want to take every precaution for our students’ safety. With that in mind, I am sharing information with you about an incident that we learned about yesterday.

On Thursday afternoon, two girls were walking home at the intersection of Upper Lake and Big Timber. A man in a “long white car” was stopped at the stop sign. As the girls were crossing the street he asked if they needed a ride. The students declined and kept walking. The man drove on.

I want to emphasize that the children did the right thing in not accepting a ride. A child should never accept the offer of a ride.

This is a good opportunity to discuss the following safety tips with your children:
    • It is safer to walk to and from school in groups.
    • If anything unusual occurs, tell an adult immediately. Parents and teachers need to know right away what happened.
    • Never talk to strangers or accept rides from them.
    • Be proactive: tour the neighborhood with your child to identify safe and dangerous circumstances and places. Arrange for your child to have immediate access to trusted neighbors or other trusted adults who could be contacted in an emergency.
    • Don’t panic. If you are afraid or have a problem, call a parent or a trusted adult.
    • Never tell people at the door, on the phone, or online that you are home alone. Plan with your child what to say and do when they are alone.
    • Keep your house key hidden. Don’t give it to anyone and don’t keep it in a visible place that would tell people you are going home to an empty house.
    • Never get into a car, enter a home, look for a lost pet, or accept candy, food or toys from an adult, unless your parents know what you are doing and have given you their permission first.
