Middle And High School Absence Information

Humble ISD believes that attendance is a crucial factor in student achievement. Thus, any absence from school represents an educational loss to the student.  All students must adhere to compulsory attendance laws and are required to attend classes or engage in online learning at least 90% of the days a class is offered.  Failure to meet these requirements may result in truancy procedures and/or loss of course credit.

  • Following an absence, a parent/guardian must contact the attendance office within 48 hours of the student's return to school. Absences can be reported by:

    • Online Absence Excuse Form

    • Parent Email to Attendance Office

    • Parent Note Returned with Student

    • Parent Phone Call to Attendance Office

    • Fax Parent Note to Attendance Office

  • Information to include:

    • Student's first and last name, ID#, grade

    • Date(s) of absence

    • Detailed reason for absence

    • Parent name, phone number, email address

  • Five days of absences may be excused by parent notifications (online absence form, email, note, phone call, and/or fax) per semester. Beyond that, medical or other official documentation may be required in order for an absence to be excused.

  • Doctor’s Visit: If a student is present any part of a school day in which a doctor’s visit occurred, the student will not be marked absent if the medical documentation is submitted to the attendance office upon the student’s return.

  • Always turn in ALL doctor, court, college notes as this does affect the coding of the absence.

No students are permitted to leave the building without being signed out by either a parent, legal guardian or any other parties listed as an EMERGENCY CONTACT on the student's information sheet.

Please be prepared to present a picture ID upon every visit to campus.

Student Attendance Processes: ATTENDANCE FOR CREDIT / SEAT TIME

According to Texas Education Code §25.092, a student must be in attendance at least 90% of the days each class is offered in order to receive credit or a final grade in the course.  The 90% rule is in effect regardless of whether the absences are excused or unexcused. Students who fail to meet the 90% attendance rule are in danger of losing credit and must meet the requirements of the Principal’s plan (Seat Time) in order to earn credit.

ARMS Attendance Requirements

To maximize student performance, students are expected to be in class on time and daily for instruction. According to the Texas Education Code §25.092, a student must be in attendance at least 90% of the days each class is offered to receive credit or a final grade in the course.  The 90% rule is in effect regardless of whether the absences are excused or unexcused. Please review some essential items related to student attendance for the 2024-2025 school year:

  • Attendance is taken within the first 5 minutes of each class period.

  • For attendance, students are marked present, tardy, or absent.  If the student is not present when attendance is taken, and the teacher of record has received no notes or excuses, the student is marked “absent”.

  • Attendance changes can only be made by the teacher of record.

  • High School Courses: Students taking courses for high school credits must also meet the 90% attendance requirement to receive the high school credit for the course.

As a parent/guardian, you can help with attendance by:

  • Making appointments outside of the school day whenever possible.

  • Ensuring any time that your child must be absent, you communicate with and send a note to our attendance office or complete the online absence form.

  • Monitor HAC weekly to ensure your child attends all classes regularly and on time. (Home Access Center Information)

  • Send your child back to school with a doctor’s excuse when absent.

  • Please visit the ARMS Attendance website for additional information.

  • Plan for your child to recover seat time with a staff member in the following ways:

  • After school tutorials

  • Saturday School (When provided for instructional support)

  • Before/After School

Fall Semester Seat Time Requirements (August 7 - December 20)

Students with more than eight absences for the fall semester are required to make up instructional hours, known as seat time. Students who do not complete the principal's plan to recover seat time will lose credit for the courses. even if they pass the class.

The administrative team will be contacting parents, meeting with students who owe seat time, and providing options for recovery of time due to excessive absences. Feel free to contact your child's Assistant Principal if you have questions about your child's attendance.  Thank you!
