New Main Entrance
The almost 25-year-old façade of KHS received a much-needed facelift. The new design features special water-resistant glass, environmentally-friendly materials, and a welcoming, light-filled design.
The design incorporates the wooded environment that is central to the school and community. "We started with a blank canopy," said Principal / Corporate Production Director of Architecture Firm PBK. And after working with campus and district leadership, "the design evolved to embrace the 'livable forest' motif" that is central to Kingwood.
Third Gym
A 13,000 square foot facility, which includes 8,300 square feet of gym space and school store, was also built. The gym is a much-anticipated addition that provides space for practices, games, competitions and activities.
Gym space is in high demand at KHS. During and after school, gyms are used primarily by volleyball in the fall and a total of eight basketball teams in the winter. But those are far from the only groups in need of gym space: Wrestling, ROTC, dance, gymnastics, cheer, orchestra, integrated athletics, drill team, academics, and community groups all utilized the facilities.
"The third gym allows us to maximize our facility for our extracurricular programs, both during the school day and after school hours," said Dr. Michael Nasra. "It also allows groups that currently utilize outdoor space, such as JROTC, to practice and drill in inclement weather."
The space also features a school store in the athletic entrance for the purpose of selling apparel, supplies, and other related Mustang spirit gear. "A school store is a way to promote school spirit, build morale, and teach students valuable business lessons as they carefully lead this initiative," said Nasra.
Health Sciences Wing
The new Health Sciences wing features a state-of-the-art ambulance simulator, lab space that includes hospital beds with manikins, and a pharmacy window similar to what you find at a neighborhood pharmacy.
Currently, there are over 320 students in Health Science classes at KHS. The new Health Science wing features both classroom and lab space used by the campus Health Science teachers, but also by the CNA, Pharmacy Tech, and EMT teachers with travel programs at the campus.
Students on the KHS campus have the opportunity to earn their PCT (Patient Care Technician) and CCMA (certified Medical Assistant) certifications while in the programs, and the travel programs offer the CNA (certified nursing assistant), Pharmacy Technician, and EMT certification as well.
"The Health Science wing is a state-of-the-art facility that allows our staff to design high quality and career-ready experiences to support our future medical practitioners," said Nasra.
