What We Do

On-Campus Prayer

We facilitate the process of praying at school. For Muslim students, this means that we actively contact their House Offices to accommodate the Zuhr Prayer so students can fulfill their obligatory prayers at school. In the past, when we had enough students, we hosted complete Jummah prayers as well! Each student’s House Office contains a “calming room” that can also function as a Prayer Room. Students wishing to use the room for prayer purposes must go there after sixth period, perform their prayers, then go to seventh period. As the KHS MSA, we ensure that the process follows state education laws and that no student is punished for leaving class to pray. Additionally, we are more than willing to advocate on behalf of a Non-Muslim student if they would like to meditate or pray at school, too! IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO PRAY AT SCHOOL, PLEASE REACH OUT TO US! CONTACT INFORMATION IS ABOVE.

Weekly Lunch Meetings

We meet most Fridays, A-Block, in Room 2112. The topics of these meetings cycle between the following:

Islamic Halaqa (Lesson): Officers deliver an insightful, educational, and enriching presentation about an Islamic topic that is beneficial to both Muslims and Non-Muslims. Examples of this in the past have included “The Five Pillars,” “Women’s Rights in Islam,” and “The Qur’an.”

Hot Topic (Interactive Discussion): Officers and the sponsor facilitate interactive discussion about a real-world issue or event going on. As high school students, we are bound to face discrimination and persecution at some point, so we as MSA hope to provide an outlet for students to share their experiences with one another and find ways to move forward. These issues will not go away unless we talk about them. These meetings aren't just limited to Islamophobia; we’ve had great discussions about Microaggressions, Educational Discrimination, and had a lawyer from CAIR (The Council for American-Islamic Relations) come and speak to us about our rights as Muslim students/allies! During these meetings, we stress that our room is a safe space for everyone.

Muslim Moment: Members deliver a presentation on something about Islam that isn’t theologically based! For example, sharing interesting facts about Islamic History, or, as a Non-Muslim, giving a presentation on your opinion of Islam. We hope to have more of these in the future and encourage anyone wishing to improve their public speaking skills to give a presentation on quite literally anything that is related to Islam.

Monthly Halal Pizza Social: At the end of every month, we order Halal Pizza from a nearby Zabihah vendor (Imtiaz Halal Grocery) and have fun together! In the past, we’ve watched movies, simply chatted with one another, and played fun games such as Nasheed Chairs (Musical Chairs but with Nasheeds). The friendships our members have made in this club are powerful, and monthly socials reinforce that.

Guest Speakers: In the past, we’ve also been blessed to have invited two representatives from CAIR (the Council for American-Islamic Relations) during our lunch meeting to speak to us about our rights as Muslim students and/or allies! We hope to bring in more speakers in the future, including a Medical Student who served as MSA President at Rice University for two years, to speak about “how to preserve ethics in STEM fields.” We also plan to host an ambassador from the Muslim Interscholastic Tournament (MIST) to thoroughly explain the tournament to our students.

Collaborations with Other KHS Clubs: We’ve been blessed to be on close terms with the Black Student Union here at KHS, whom we have hosted meetings with in the past, due to our similarities– after all, we are both groups that aim to reduce the persecution of students at KHS. We have also hosted a social with the Speech and Debate club! God willing, we plan to host many collaborative lunch meetings and out-of-school events with other KHS organizations in the future.

Monthly Chai Chat

Once a month, we aim to host an after-school “Chai Chat” in which we invite a local Imam from a local Mosque (either Kingwood Islamic Center or Fatima Masjid) to educate us about an Islamic topic in a cozy, informal, and safe environment… with Chai, of course! These usually occur during a Wednesday night, from 5:00 - 7:30 PM, at KHS, in our lunch meetings room.

Yearly Iftar

During Ramadan, we host a school-wide Teacher Appreciation Iftar, or dinner, in the KHS Cafeteria for the community! This initiative is done by our very own students and teachers, whose families cook traditional meals in bulk and bring to KHS for the community to dine from. For our first Iftar in 2024, we had more than one hundred people attend- roughly 50% Muslim and 50% Non-Muslim. We take this chance to educate our community about Islam and honor our staff, who continue to make this school a better place for all of us.

Girls’ S’mores Night

When the weather gets cold, we host a girls-only social for our MSA members to deepen their friendships and enjoy a night together! We have a s’mores board, complete with Halal Marshmallows, and a live fire pit. This event takes place at the house of an officer.

Islamic Field Trips

So far in the 2024-2025 school year, we’ve been blessed to take two MSA-sponsored trips: a Saturday trip to the annual Islamic Arts Festival, and a Friday (during school) field trip with the MSA at Atascosita High School to Masjid Al-Ansaar (in the Woodlands) to pray Jummah!

The Muslim Interscholastic Tournament

This year, we plan to take a bus to MIST, the Muslim Interscholastic Tournament that occurs in March/April! The tournament offers events for everyone- whether its sports, e-sports, art, speaking, cooking, writing, Quranic recitation, and many more. The rulebook can be found here- it contains everything about the 2025 MIST Tournament, including all events, rules, and other information. https://static1.squarespace.com/static/5610f7bce4b033aa91249ccd/t/673da08f720cce3acfa118db/1732092051293/Rulebook+-+2025.pdf

Circle of Champions (InterMSA)

We are also actively involved in an organization to unite the High School MSAs of Greater Houston called the Circle of Champions/InterMSA! The account’s Instagram handle is @htxintermsa, or https://www.instagram.com/htxintermsa/

We hope to provide resources, brotherhood, and structuring help through this effort. We achieve this through monthly programs and communication platforms. Stay updated because we have a lot coming soon, InshaAllah (God willing)!
