America has been honoring brilliant students through honor societies since 1921. Educators began to notice the need for subject specific honor societies in America’s high schools in the 1980's. Since then, new honor societies have sprung up to recognize and encourage students in such areas as English, Art, French, and Spanish. Until now, there has been honor society to recognize student excellence in Science. In this era of rapidly changing technologies and scientific advancement, it is time to encourage and recognize high school students in the Sciences. Science National Honor Society's goal is to engender a new group of young thinkers who will be the future of industry, research, and scientific exploration for America.

The following are questions we are frequently asked by students and parents about joining Science National Honor Society.

When can I join SciNHS?
Students become eligible to apply for SciNHS after the fall semester of their sophomore year. Additionally, students must have attended KHS for at least one semester. Student will be considered offical members in their Junior and Senior years.

How do I join?
To join SciNHS, students must complete an application, meeting the requirements delineated. To be considered by the Chapter Advisors, the application must be turned in on time and have followed all of the instructions. The Chapter Advisors have final determination in the selection of members after reviewing the application.

What are the requirements?
All students must have a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher. Students must have taken at least one preAP or honors course in their freshman or sophmore year. Students must be planning to take at least one AP/Dual/Honors course their junior or senior year. A member must have an un-weighted 3.667 Science GPA (members can earn no more than one B in their science classes).

How can I earn participation points?
Participation must be earned in science related school and community participation. The majority of these should be done in official SciNHS activites, lectures, and meetings. A student can earn service for participation in science related community, civic, and school clubs and organizations but must seek approval from Chaptor Advisors and Chapter Officers for the hours to count. Additionally, participation hours can be earned for participating in volunteer projects run by that are science related, once again per approval of Officers and Advisors. For more specifics, please speak to the Chapter Advisors or the Chapter Officers.

What science related activities can I count for my application?
Any science related activity completed from the summer preceding the student's eight grade year and on may be counted towards the Activity Packet. However, hours and events from before eight grade will not count.

If I don't get in the first time, may I apply again?
Yes, students may continue to apply each calendar year through their senior year. Students not selected for membership are sent a notice identifying the areas where they should work to improve.
