Dear Riverwood Middle School Families,

This morning we received a report that one of our students was involved in a minor accident while riding their bike home from school on Thursday, September 26.

A vehicle struck the front wheel of the student’s bike in the crosswalk at Kingwood Drive and Mills Branch. The driver of the car stopped to see if the student was ok, and then left the area. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.

We want to remind everyone that a crossing guard is stationed at High Valley and Kingwood Drive. There is not a crossing guard at Mills Branch. RMS does have a volunteer program to help with campus and crosswalk safety. Training is provided. If you would like to partner with us, please contact Mr. Roser at Matthew.Roser@humbleisd.net.

With safety always a primary concern, please review the following important safety tips for drivers:

Be especially alert around children and prepared to stop at any moment.
Always use turn signals.
Follow the speed limit. School zone speed limits are purposefully set low because children are unpredictable.
Come to a complete stop at intersections with stop signs.
Always stop for loading or unloading school buses. Driving around stopped school buses is against the law.
Plan ahead. Leave early for your destination and build in extra time for congestion, especially around schools during arrival and dismissal times.

Here are some important safety reminders to review with your children:

All students should wear a helmet. Bicycle helmets reduce the risk of serious injury or death. Houston City Ordinance requires helmets for those under 18 riding a bike.
Always stop and check for traffic in both directions.
Don’t walk or ride too close to parked cars. Door opens suddenly.
Stop at all stop signs and obey red lights, just as cars do.
Make eye contact with a driver and wait for the driver to signal you to go.
Leave home in plenty of time, don’t rush.
Wear bright colored clothes to be visible and closed toe shoes to protect your feet.

Please always be patient and aware of your surroundings in our school zones.
