Language Acquisition: Parent & Family Information Sessions

The Texas Education Agency (TEA) invites you to a night of Parental Engagement Strategies.

Empowering Families through Helpful Resources
5:30 p.m. | Thursday, February 22, 2024
The Texas Education Agency (TEA) presents a virtual information session for parents and families of emergent bilingual students. This session focuses on family outreach and training that will provide parents with literary services, activities and training needed to improve their English language skills.

The virtual information session will be available in English, Spanish, Vietnamese, Arabic, French, Mandarin Chinese, Russian, Ukrainian and Urdu. Attendees will be provided with links to access the information session in their preferred language at the beginning of the session.

During the session, TEA representatives will discuss the TELPAS exam that students in the Emergent Bilingual program will take this spring, what it entails and how students should respond to the exam.

Parents will also learn about the different platforms that provide student support including paid subscription websites that are available to Humble ISD Students, and they will have the opportunity to listen to advice on how they can build a relationship with their student’s school and what their rights as parents are.

The session will be divided into three main topics discussed by TEA representatives for bilingual education:

English Learner Support Project Manager Sharon Santo will cover the resources available to parents and families through the TXEL website, such as the Parents and Families newsletter, which is available in English and in Spanish, the TELPAS Practice test site, where parents can find practice tests for both TELPAS and STAAR and resources they can utilize to learn with their students at home.

TEA Project Specialist Alba Avila will discuss biliteracy practices at home and at school. She will talk to parents about the immediate and long-term benefits of biliteracy and how parents can help their students develop their English skills at home.

The TEA’s Federal/State Engagement and Projects Manager, Rickey Santellana, will speak to parents about the educational school system and the importance of creating a strong partnership between the home and the school by establishing a communication system that is consistent, multilingual and that is used frequently.

At the end of the session, parents will have the opportunity to hear the answers to the most frequently asked questions by parents in the state of Texas.

Parents should register online to attend this virtual information session.
