Abigail Greenwood, a seventh grader at CMS, (front, center) visits Elizabeth, Louisiana, after her family drove from Kingwood to deliver relief supplies.
Creekwood Middle School seventh grader Abigail Greenwood and her family put together an effort to provide relief to those hardest hit by Hurricane Laura in southwest Louisiana.
“It’s great to have the opportunity to help those who helped us in our time of need,” Abigail Greenwood, CMS seventh grader, said.
Abigail and her family, who live in Kingwood, saw firsthand what a natural disaster could do when Hurricane Harvey flooded the area in 2017.
They witnessed the heroic efforts of volunteers with the Cajun Navy who traveled from Louisiana to help their Texas neighbors affected by the storm. This act prompted Abigail and her family to return the favor after Hurricane Laura.
“When I saw the suffering of the people in Louisiana, I thought it would only be fair to help them as they helped us,” Abigail said. “So I asked my mother if we could take action by coordinating a donation drive to help the Cajun Navy.”
On Sept. 4, the Greenwood family made the journey to Elizabeth, Louisiana, to deliver what they collected in donations to the Cajun Navy. The delivery included a variety of supplies needed for the recovery effort.

“We received over 100 items, such as tarps, drinking water, batteries, insect repellent, and non-perishable food items,” Buffy Greenwood, Abigail’s mom, said. “We had enough items to fill a full size SUV with items left over.”
The Greenwoods are grateful for the response from their Creekwood Middle School family as well as the surrounding community.
After the initial donation, the response became so great that the family decided to make additional trips to Louisiana with more supplies in the coming weeks.
Donations for Greenwood’s hurricane relief drive sit at her family’s doorstep waiting to be packed up and driven to Hurricane Laura victims in Louisiana.
