Go Public, an organization dedicated to promoting public education in Texas, recently selected an image created by Atascocita High School art student Jaylee Whitaker as one of its nine winning tote bag designs in the state.
Jaylee’s design, titled “Where the magic happens,” was selected out of 129 entries in Go Public’s contest titled “Public Schools Provide Art.”
“I draw mainly humans and characters from shows and movies but wanted to get better,” Jaylee said. “I entered the contest as a way to broaden my work as an artist.”
Jaylee said her source of inspiration is the passion shared by each artist. “I was inspired by the feeling many artists get when they do what they’re passionate about.”
Animated shows, Jaylee said, have helped in her discovery or art. “When you take a look at how much is put into these shows, it’s incredible!”
Jaylee, a junior, has developed a reputation for her work in Humble ISD. She developed the 2021 Fine Arts Festival poster and invitations for the event.
“Humble ISD celebrates Jaylee’s work and her accomplishments as an artist,” Stacia Gower, Humble ISD Visual Art Coordinator, said. “We are proud of Jaylee and the teachers who have helped her grow and express her artistic voice.”
Humble ISD is a part of Go Public, an organization supported by Texas school districts to promote great things happening in public schools. Go Public showcased Fine Arts programs, like Humble ISD’s, with a special focus on high school art students like Jaylee.
“Jaylee’s design brought Fine Arts to life and had a beautiful aesthetic that is evident in her work,” Lisa Losasso Jackson, Executive Director of Go Public, said.
Tote bags with her design are available for purchase at Go Public’s online store. Jaylee will also receive a Michael’s gift card for her work.
