Humble ISD held a dedication ceremony for the new Guy M. Sconzo Early College High School on Saturday, Sept. 18.

During the dedication ceremony, Dr. Sconzo was remembered for his warm personality, his accomplishments, and how he was an advocate for students. He was also recognized for his work to establish an early college high school in Humble ISD.

“He started this, having no idea how great it would be,” Dr. Elizabeth Fagen, Humble ISD Superintendent, said. “We are proud to build on the shoulders of the work he did.”

Guy M. Sconzo Early College High School, formerly known as Quest Early College High School, was renamed to honor Dr. Sconzo after a vote by the Humble ISD Board of Trustees in December 2020.

“On behalf of the Humble ISD School Board, we are proud the Sconzo name is on this building,” Martina Lemond Dixon, Humble ISD Board of Trustees President, said. “His influence expanded beyond boardrooms and executive conference rooms.”

Speakers at the dedication included State Rep. Dan Huberty and City of Houston Mayor Pro Tem Dave Martin.

As Superintendent from 2001 to 2016, Dr. Sconzo led Humble ISD through a period of tremendous growth. He oversaw the opening of 14 new schools and student enrollment increased by 60 percent.

“I knew when he handed me the baton, I had big shoes to fill,” Dr. Elizabeth Fagen, Humble ISD Superintendent, said. “His work has left a lasting legacy in Humble ISD.”

Guy M. Sconzo Early College High School is located at 9155 Will Clayton Parkway. The new campus, measuring just over 50,000 sq. ft., is the first campus the school has occupied on its own. Over the years, it shared campuses with the Community Learning Center, Summer Creek High School, Lone Star College-Kingwood, Humble High School, and the former Humble ISD Career and Technical Education Center. The new campus is built for up to 600 students.

Guy M. Sconzo Early College High School incorporates a college atmosphere with collaborative, flexible and innovative spaces. It provides a seamless pathway from high school to college. Students take college courses along with their high school classes, giving them the opportunity to graduate with a high school diploma and an associate’s degree from Lone Star College-Kingwood.

Sconzo is a small-school environment with individualized learning in which students are divided into small homerooms called “families” that remain in place throughout their time at the school.

Students experience a college-preparatory environment with numerous support systems in place to foster learning through group projects, internships, and service projects geared to help the community.

During their time at Sconzo, each graduating class donates an average of over 200,000 hours of service to the community. Each class typically earns an average of 5,600 hours of college credit and approximately $1.5 million in scholarship money.
