Humble Museum

The Humble Museum is offering the community a chance to experience life during the American Revolution as part of its event, “A Revolutionary Experience!”

The event, free to the public, is taking place Saturday, Jan. 22, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the museum located at 601 Higgins Street in Humble. The museum is supported primarily by the City of Humble, with additional support by the Friends of the Humble Museum and by individual donations. It originally opened as the Humble Bicentennial Museum in 1976 and has been at its current location since November 2020.

“A Revolutionary Experience!” will feature historic recreations of Revolutionary-era living, including an 18th century town site; a demonstration of a Continental Army encampment; flintlock firing demonstrations; a working 18th century kitchen; and a brief, family-oriented play starring students from Humble ISD high schools.

“This is a great way for the community to experience life as it was during the Revolutionary Era, rather than just reading it from a book or learning about it from a movie,” Dr. Robert Meaux, Humble Museum President and author of the book “Images of America: Humble,” said.

Molly O’Brien, a student at Atascocita High School, is among the Humble ISD students who will perform in the play. “What makes this experience so awesome for me is the people I’ve been able to meet through it,” O’Brien said. “I hope to learn the unique and individual histories of each of the characters in our shows and how they all come together to create the story that we will perform.”

The play will be presented at the top of each hour from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. during the event.

The student actors are part of a local acting group called the Revolutionary Education Acting Company. Established in 2020, the group is made up of 27 Humble ISD students and one student from another school district. John Schmonsees is director of the group.

“Performing at an event like this helps me and the kids in the audience have a better understanding of the revolution,” Preston Ellis, actor and Atascocita High School student, said. “I hope to learn more about the revolution and the stories you don’t often hear.”

In addition to the performance by students, “A Revolutionary Experience!” will include walk-up stations for children to make 18th century crafts as well as games.

“Our goal is to present to the community the historic events that shaped the foundation of our country, in a way they can experience it firsthand,” Dr. Meaux said.
