The Summer Creek High School boys track and field team won the Class 6A State Title at the 2022 UIL state meet. The event was held May 13-15 in Austin.
This is the second year in a row that Summer Creek won the title. The Bulldogs were also State Champions in 2013.
A number of big wins at the competition helped push the team over the top by scoring 70 overall points.
Track and Field coach Shelton Ervin, Coach of the Year for high school track and field, is proud of the accomplishments of his team.
“Winning the title two years in a row puts us in a very exclusive group,” Coach Ervin said. “Only a handful of teams have accomplished this feat at this level.”
In the boys 4x400-meter relay, the team of Blake Gibson, Dylan Jacobs, Darius Rainey, and Malcolm Washington earned gold with a time of 3:10.36.
Senior Aaron Davis took top honors in the long jump competition, clearing 25 feet, 3 3/4 inches. It was the seventh-longest jump in Class 6A state meet history.
Darius Rainey, also a senior, followed with his own gold with a 1 minute, 50.63 second finish in the 800-meter title. He followed with another gold in the 400-meter dash with 46.36 second finish. Rainey made history as the only male athlete to ever win the 400 meters and 800 meters gold in the same year at the UIL 6A classification.
For the Lady Bulldogs, senior Jade Johnson earned gold in the triple jump with a mark of 42 feet, 6 inches.
“Going into this competition, I knew what our kids were capable of,” Coach Ervin said. “This is a big win not just for them, but for the Summer Creek community as well.”
Coach Ervin has been coaching at Summer Creek since the school opened in 2009. He’s been with Humble ISD since 2006, having coached multiple sports at Atascocita High School prior to his time at Summer Creek. Before joining Humble ISD, Coach Ervin was a member of the University of Houston Track and Field coaching staff.
