Humble Middle School orchestra students will have the opportunity to receive free, private lessons from Humble High School students thanks to a $10,824 grant from the Humble ISD Education Foundation.

Rachel Broadbear, the orchestra director at Humble Middle School, created her “students teaching students” initiative to offer after-school lessons to her students.

“In a classroom of 40 students, 30 of them are catching on and wanting to push ahead, and the other 10 are not understanding yet, that’s who I need to have that one-on-one time, so they can figure it out. Because they have the ability, they just need more time,” Broadbear said.

The high school students who participate in the program are selected by the Humble High School orchestra directors to work with individual students once a week for 30 minutes. Students are paid $10 for every lesson they teach.

“So many high schoolers that did this pilot program expressed how excited and grateful they are for the opportunity, because a few of them are thinking about going into an education career,” Broadbear said.
