Humble ISD health science tech students put their lessons from the classroom into action in a simulated Emergency Response Day on Thursday, November 10, 2022. This year marked the fourth year of the event, which was held at United City Church.
More than 270 students from Humble ISD high schools participated in a triage competition in which they walked into a room with injured victims who they needed to treat as if they were first responders.
“It takes all the skills and knowledge that the kids have been building in the classroom for several years in some cases and allows them to put it into practice,” Humble ISD Director of CTE Larkin Le Sueur said. “It gives them the opportunity to rub shoulders with industry professionals. It gives them a real-life scenario where they can use those skills and feel some of the pressure that goes along with treating an emergency situation.”
Part of the simulated event was treating a wound on the victim before they became unresponsive and the health science tech students had to perform CPR on a dummy as well as use an AED (Automated External Defibrillator) machine to save the victim.
The day also included presentations from members of the Atascocita Fire Department as well as other special presenters.
“Overall, it helps the kids connect the dots for possibly what comes next with their career,” La Sueur said.
