In her 21 years of leading the Humble High School Theatre Department, Brandy Rood has an extra height of excitement heading into the new year.
Prior to the holiday break, HHS theatre students were working diligently on rehearsals and finishing the set for The Addams Family musical, while students and teachers from the dance (choreography), choir (music direction), construction trades and engineering (set construction) and art (murals) departments were also chipping in.
The musical is the first for Humble High School to present in a decade. Opening night is set for Thursday, January 12, and will be the beginning of a three-night showing through Saturday, January 14. All shows begin at 7 p.m.
“Excitement level for the musical is probably the highest for me,” Rood said. “I’ve directed a ton of plays, in my career at Humble High School I’ve been able to direct three musicals. I’m so excited and I take this role seriously knowing that we haven’t been able to do this in so long. I’m so thrilled. I can’t even believe it is happening.”
This will also be the first theatrical performance in the newly renovated Performing Arts Center at Humble High School. The improvements to the PAC were a part of the 2018 Humble ISD Bond.
“I don’t think we could think of any better way to open the new Performing Arts Center than to kickoff a musical,” Humble High School Technical Director Matthew Mosher said. “It’s been 10 years since we’ve done a musical, so it’s fitting that we’re doing this show that is bigger than anything we’ve done, that brings together all the departments and showcases what we can do as a school and a fine arts department.”
