Humble ISD invites families to a Playground Dedication and Open House from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m., Thursday, February 16, at Park Lakes Elementary School, 4400 Wilson Road.
Park Lakes Elementary School will celebrate its new safari themed playground. The public is invited to a brief dedication ceremony at 4:30 p.m. on Feb. 16. Students from Park Lakes Elementary School will perform songs. Three food trucks - Moe’s BBQ, Creole Soul and La Catrina Taco Truck - are scheduled to be on site. After the ceremony, children can play until 5:30 p.m. Parking is available at Park Lakes Elementary School.
Park Lakes Elementary School is the second Humble ISD campus to debut an updated playground in the 2022-2023 school year. In the fall, Woodland Hills Elementary opened its fairytale-themed playground.
New or additional playground equipment, with themes focused on imaginative play and learning, are being installed at every elementary school on handicap- accessible, poured-in-place rubber surfaces instead of mulch, over the next six years. Elementary playgrounds at Humble ISD schools are open to the public when school is not in session.
At Park Lakes Elementary School, for the younger students, the playground has a roller slide, a zebra bouncy rider, a spiral slide, a cozy dome, a giraffe cutout, and musical pieces to make sound.
On the larger playground, equipment includes a lion, an outdoor classroom with log-shaped benches, a water buffalo, slides, climbers, spinners, swings, overhead climbers, a bouncy Jeep, spring pod steppers, global motion, sway fun and a sensory wall. The playground also includes a decorative elephant on the main tower, which includes a telescope to look out over the land, cut out photos of a cheetah and a rhinoceros, a standing giraffe and hippo and an alligator head to hop on over the image of a pond in the playground flooring. Also, there is a pretend Jeep with steering wheels. The handicap-accessible playground flooring features depictions of a trail surrounded by grass, a pond and a sunset on the Serengeti.
