National School Nurse Day, which is May 10, is set aside to honor this profession and also foster a better understanding of the role of school nurses in the education setting, according to the National Association of School Nurses.

“They play a critical role in our schools,” Director of Communicative & Health Specialty Support Services Krystal Vincent said. “The mission of Humble ISD Health Services is to enhance the health and well being of the students, staff, and community thus supporting the education of all students through maximizing their educational time.”

National Nurses week is celebrated from May 6 - May 12 each year.

Humble ISD employs 83 nurses across its 47 campuses. In that number, 49 are Registered Nurses (RN) and 21 are a Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN). Humble ISD also has three Flex Nurses, two Clerical Aids, and eight substitutes on staff as well. Every campus in Humble ISD has at least one RN on staff.

On average, school nurses in Humble ISD see between 14 and 44 students per day in the clinic.

School nurses are required to be up to date on AED, STB, CPR, Vision, Hearing and Spinal Screening, Diabetes Risk Assessment Screening, Seizure Training and Human Trafficking Prevention training.

“Every year we make sure that they have the best training possible because they are first on the scene,” Vincent said. “They play a vital role in that student getting the help that they need.”

School nurses are also up to date on procedures when it comes to head injuries, diabetes, anaphylaxis, seizures and asthma.

Along with taking care of students who come into their clinics on a daily basis, school nurses are also the ones administering medications, following up with families on immunizations and healthcare plans and making sure those are up to date along with many other duties.

Some other duties include overseeing Chronic Illness Management; scoliosis screening; Health Education lessons in the classroom; ARD/504 involvement staff training; playground safety training; Campus Emergency Team; Stop the Bleed training; Healthy Lifestyle Education; Programs and Challenges for staff; teaching/guiding/supporting students to become more independent (especially chronic conditions); provide mental health care in coordination with counselors and community resources; Campus Threat Assessment Team; works with Registrar regarding attendance; helps coordinate homebound services and communicable disease management.

Humble ISD is looking for RN’s and LVN’s for the upcoming 2023-2024 school year as well as substitutes. Apply today if you are interested in becoming a school nurse in Humble ISD.

“We need some great candidates,” Vincent said. “My focus is on quality with candidates because our students are very important and we want to make sure we have the best to serve them.”
