It was a record-setting year for Humble ISD at the North Harris (Texas) Destination Imagination Competition in February.
On February 10, Humble ISD took a record 14 teams to participate in the international, project-based educational program that encourages innovation, teamwork, and creative problem solving.
Students chose one STEAM-based (science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics) challenge and worked in teams to research, plan, create, and present their solution to the challenge.
At the end of the competition, there was more history made by Humble ISD as four of the 14 teams advanced to the state competition:
Centennial Elementary: Team Dino-Mites (1st Place winners)-Coach Heathir Fosher
Oaks Elementary: Team Soaring Owls (1st Place winners)-Coaches Christina Michie and Nicole Nixon
Woodcreek Middle School: Team WMS Lions (2nd Place winners) Coach Francisco Zamarripa
Centennial Elementary: Team Create-mates (2nd Place winners)-Coach Heathir Fosher
In addition to advancing to the state competition, two teams also received special awards at the North Harris competition:
Renaissance Awards - This award is given for outstanding skill in the areas of design, engineering, execution or performance.
Centennial Elementary - Dino-mites
Dino-mites showed outstanding skill in the area of designing their dinosaur casing and puppet. They also applied their research knowledge about carbon-14 dating throughout their presentation. The team was highly competent in being able to both explain and apply the process of nuclear decay and half-life to dating an ancient object.
Spirit of DI Awards - This award is given for exceptional Spirit, Teamwork, Volunteerism, and Sportsmanship- those who act as superior role models.
Oaks Elementary - Soaring Owls
This team had amazing teamwork throughout the whole performance. Their launching integrated perfectly with the story. Each member knew exactly what to do and when to do it. They had fun and so did the appraisers!
The Dino-Mites, Soaring Owls, WMS Lions and Create-mates will now prepare to compete in the Lone Star Finals, which are slated for April 12-13.
