Woodcreek Middle School’s Gwenanne Michalsky was one of 10 Houston-area teachers honored by the Astros Foundation and Honeywell as Honeywell Robotics/Science Teachers of the Year during a special pregame ceremony at the Saturday, August 31, Houston Astros game inside Minute Maid Park.
“I am so honored. It is an opportunity to keep pouring into my school and students,” Michalsky said. “My husband and I are huge Astros fans so it was very cool to be down on the field and see Minute Maid from a whole different perspective.”
Michalsky teaches eighth grade science, with one section of Introduction to STEM, at Woodcreek Middle School in Humble ISD and is in her seventh year of teaching.
Honeywell, a proud sponsor of the Astros Foundation, hosts Robotics Camps throughout the city each summer and the camp participants have the opportunity to come to Astros games on Sunday during the summer and demonstrate to other children their robotics and coding knowledge.
As part of the partnership, Honeywell also highlights award-winning coding robotics and science teachers in the Houston community.
Along with the honor of being named a Honeywell Robotics/Science Teacher of the Year, Michalsky was awarded $2,000 that she plans to utilize to purchase a robot for students to enter competitions with this school year.
“This is the most exciting part for me because this money is going to allow me to invest in upgrading one of our robots,” Michalsky said. “It has been a goal of mine to have a group of kids participate in Vex Robotics competitions because it can lead to the opportunity for kids to get to compete with other kids from literally all over the world. It is another step to continue elevating our campus robotics program.”
