Gator Chomp! Message From the Principal, Week of August 14

Good morning, Gator Students & Parents!

We can not begin to tell you how proud we are about how well our Gators have started this school year!  Students have learned very quickly how to transition in our hallways and are doing a great job following campus expectations.  Communication with you will be regular from us through the “Gator Chomp” emails and monthly newsletters.  It will be filled with information that you need to know!  Be sure to follow us on TWITTER: @HumbleISD_ARMS

As we approach our 2nd week in “The Swamp”, we have a few reminders to make our campus processes even smoother and better! We thank you for how you have partnered with us as we start this school year and we look forward to growing our relationships with you!

Late Arrival - This Thursday - August 17th!

On Thursday, August 17, 2023, our students have “late arrival”.  This means that our doors open for students to enter the building at 9:30 a.m. and 1st period begins at 10:00 a.m.  Please plan to ensure that your child is on time to school.  Students arriving after 10:00 on late arrival days will be marked tardy (when we start counting tardies the following week).

No Tardy Parties

As an incentive for students to be on time, we will have random “No Tardy Parties”!  These celebrations allow your child to have a brain break and enjoy some free time socializing with their peers doing some fun and engaging activities led by our staff. Please encourage your child to learn their schedule and routes quickly so that they are not tardy to class.

Dress Code

Our students are doing a great job following the dress code expectations.  We have only had to make a few phone calls home regarding dress code.  When students arrive to school out of dress code, they are not allowed to go to class until the dress code violation is corrected.  This causes them to lose valuable instructional time.  Please review our DRESS CODE POLICY and reach out to us if you have any questions.  Thank you!

Schedule Change Requests

As we begin to review our students’ schedules for changes this week, our counselors have focused on ensuring that all students were enrolled and had a schedule.  Some schedule changes have been made and they are still working through many others.   If you are requesting a schedule change for your child, you will receive a link to a form to complete that will allow you to submit your request.  Schedule change requests will open on August 21, 2023 and are subject to availability and scheduling constraints.  An email from our lead counselor will be sent out in a few days detailing how to go about requesting a change.  We appreciate your patience as our team works through ensuring that all students are in the correct classes.

Tutorials

Tutorials will begin on August 21st (or sooner if a student needs assistance earlier).  Tutorials are scheduled with teachers individually and can be provided by any teacher within that content area.

Gator Bucks

Students are able to earn “Gator Bucks” for behaviors that our staff sees that deserves recognition and praise.  Encourage your child to always do things “The Gator Way”, being a model student!  Students will be able to redeem their Gator Bucks for prizes or for patio time during lunches.

Open House

Please plan to join us for Open House on August 23, 2023 from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m.  You will have the chance to meet your child’s teachers.  We hope to see you there!

Save the Date/Time:  “Popcorn with the Principals” will be held before Open House from 5:30 - 6:00 in the cafeteria!  Take some time to meet our administrators & counselors and talk to us about your hopes for your child’s middle school years!  We want to build bonds with you that will strengthen their foundation in middle school.

Safety Drills & Emergencies

Safety is our top priority for our students and staff!  Throughout the school year, our campus will conduct numerous drills to ensure that our students/staff know how to respond in the event of a real emergency.  Most safety drills are unannounced and will take place in an orderly fashion on our campus.  Some of our drills require students to wait outside and some require them to “hold” on the inside.  During our first week, our students learned about our safety drills!  In the event of a true emergency, parents will be notified by the campus principal or the district. Safety drills will continue throughout the entire school year.

Intake/Dismissal

In regards to our campus’ plans for intake and dismissal, one of our top priorities is to ensure that our students are able to get to and from school safely.  Our staff are on duty from 7:50 a.m. to 8:20 a.m. each day to assist students.  Students are allowed to enter the building at 7:50 a.m. each morning and dismissal begins at 4:00 p.m.

Our staff will wear safety vests and will be holding large stop signs in some areas to assist with students crossing intersections and driveways.  During the first 3 days, we have managed to improve the time it takes to intake/dismiss, while still maintaining safety.  Once we get settled in our routine, our car rider line is normally cleared by 4:15 each day.  We encourage you to continue to plan for additional time during the intake and dismissal process at the beginning of each year.  As it always does, it gets better each day.  We appreciate your patience and safe driving as we work through our processes.  Please share and watch the following video with your child(ren) to promote safety procedures.

SAFETY VIDEO:

BUS RIDERS

  • Bus riders must report directly to the bus ramp.  Our buses will depart from the campus no later than 4:10 each day, unless there is a delay in the release time..

CAR RIDERS

  • If your child is a car rider, the only loading/drop off area is at the front entrance.  For safety, we are asking that students do not load vehicles when cars are double stacked in the car rider loop. We want them to avoid crossing lanes of traffic.  Ask your child to wait in the front until you pull around to a single lane.

  • Please be reminded to pull all the way up before your child gets in your vehicle.  We have seen students and parents doing a great job of this!  Thank you so much!  This helps the line move faster and helps us keep our students safe!

  • Please remind your child to cross streets and driveways at crosswalks only.

WALKERS/BIKERS

  • Walk in groups and stay together

  • Walk your bike across the intersection and when you get on campus

  • Stay on the sidewalks

  • No horseplaying or running

  • Avoid cell phone usage

  • Avoid wearing earbuds

  • Look both ways when you cross the street

  • Follow traffic signals/pedestrian signals

We are excited about week 2 and are looking forward to seeing our Gators back on campus on Monday morning!  As always, be safe and have a great weekend!  Go GATORS!!!
