The Program for Accelerated Education or PACE is a Dropout Prevention Program for students who are at-risk of not finishing high school. This program provides high school students with the opportunity to learn and earn credit for courses they missed or failed. PACE provides at-risk students with an alternative academic setting in which to earn a high school diploma and still graduate with classmates at their home high school campus.
PACE is a small and student centered, alternative academic program. Admittance in the program requires a recommendation from the home-campus counselor, as well as an application and interview process. Applications may be printed from this site or obtained from counselors on one of the six main high school campuses.
PACE is designed for upper-grade level students who lack a small number of credits in order to graduate. High School Seniors receive first priority for admittance into the program. Pregnant students and those with children may also find flexibility in the PACE program that will meet their individual needs.
OFSDP - Optional Flexible School Day Program
Students attending PACE participate in the Optional Flexible School Day Program (OFSDP). It allows Humble ISD to provide flexible hours and days of attendance for students who meet at least one of the requirements of the Texas Education Code 29.0822(a). The goal of the program is to improve graduation rates for students who are in danger of dropping out of school, have dropped out, or are behind in core subject courses.
Questions & Answers
What is PACE exactly?
PACE ("Program of Accelerated Education") is a drop out prevention program that is available to students who may be at risk of not graduating from high school. Students may earn credits by repeating courses failed at his/her home campus. Students also have the opportunity to take classes for original credit, thus allowing them to graduate with the credits required by the Texas State Board of Education.
May I attend PACE in order to graduate early?
No. The PACE Program was not created for students who would like to graduate early. It is designed for those students who are experiencing academic challenges at their home campus that may prevent them from graduating on time with their class. PACE provides an alternative learning environment for students to complete academic requirements for high school graduation.
How do I get into PACE?
To apply for admission to the PACE program, an application process is required. Your counselor at your home campus will provide you with the forms and discuss the program with you and your parents. If the counselor recommends you for the program, they will complete an application on your behalf. The counselor will then fax your application and the counselor's application into PACE office.
What are the requirements to be accepted into PACE?
All students MUST have a minimum of 12 credits to apply to the PACE program.
How are the PACE courses administered?
PACE students work individually, and each student will work at a different "pace." A minimum of one module completion per week must be maintained. There will be no teacher lecturing in front of your class; rather, Texas State Certified teachers will develop an individualized graduation plan for every student. Students will complete "modules" which have been developed to cover the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) for each course. Some PACE classes use Edgenuity (education2020), which is a computer assisted learning recovery program purchased by the school district. Other courses are not offered on e2020, in which case, students will use traditional textbooks and teacher generated assignments in order to cover the course objectives. Students and parents must understand that PACE is an accelerated program, designed for students who want to get their work done with consistent diligence. Students, who are not serious about completing their assignments, do not meet module count and/or do not meet the minimum attendance requirements may be removed from the program and re-assigned to the home campus.
What is the attendance policy at PACE?
PACE students will clock in and out each day in the PACE office. A time card will be used to keep track of the students' attendance. Students are required to be clocked in every day (Monday thru Friday) for a minimum of 20 hours per week. The PACE Program is open: Monday through Friday beginning at 7:00 AM until 3:30 PM Students who do not satisfy his/her attendance and module count may be removed from PACE and returned to the home campus.
Will I receive a diploma from PACE?
No, students will not receive diploma from PACE. Upon completion of the program, students will receive a Certificate of Completion and PACE will verify, to the home campus, that the student has successfully completed the requirements for graduation. The actual diploma will be issued by Humble ISD. Please be advised that PACE students are still active students on their home campuses and will receive their diplomas from their home campus. PACE students are also permitted to participate in homecoming, school dances, prom, project graduation, graduation ceremonies and all other school related activities. Please visit the home campus webpage for schedules, dates and other details.
How many students are at PACE?
In order to remain "student-centered" and provide individualized instruction, enrollment at PACE is limited to approximately 100 students. High school seniors always have first priority to enroll. In order to meet the variety of individual needs for PACE students, it is beneficial as well as necessary keep the program small in order to meet those needs.
May I work on this at home?
You may be permitted to complete some reading and formative learning activities at home; however, tests, exams and projects that will require that you demonstrate a minimum level of mastery must be done in class under the direction of your certified teaching professional.
