From Champions to Coaches

In a heartwarming twist of fate, the Kingwood Lady Mustangs’ journey to the Texas High School State Softball Semi-Finals is guided by a duo with a remarkable history. As teammates at Dobie High School, their synergy on the field translated into State Championships. The 1993 Dobie team, considered one of the best Texas high school softball teams ever, saw Mata get one of the few base hits and score the only run in a 1-0 victory over Tomball in the State Championship. Two years later, Williams-Yates pitched a perfect game in their 11-0 triumph over Plano East, sealing their second championship.

Before reuniting at Kingwood, both Williams-Yates and Mata had successful careers as head coaches at different schools. The coaches admit they had previously talked about coaching together over the years. They had an opportunity and decided to come together. They aimed to create something special for the Lady Mustangs, blending their rich experiences and championship pedigrees to build a powerhouse program. That’s exactly what they have done.

Now, Williams-Yates and Mata find themselves on the same team once again, guiding their daughters and host of other great athletes. Their unique experience offers an invaluable reservoir of wisdom and strategy.

In an arena where the past and present converge, the Kingwood Lady Mustangs’ journey to the semi-finals is more than a quest for a championship. It is a celebration of legacy, the power of mentorship, and the unbreakable bonds forged through sports. Under the guidance of Williams-Yates and Mata, the Lady Mustangs are playing for history, their coaches, and the players future generations that will be inspired by their story.
