As Megan Ortiz wrote her nomination letter to the Texas Association of Journalism Educators, the Kingwood Park High School adviser emphatically described her nominee for the association’s Administrator of the Year Award as a “tremendous advocate for student journalists”.

A person who has “championed the kids’ ability to choose their content and write what they feel is important for their communities”.

Ortiz was describing retired Humble ISD Assistant Superintendent of High Schools Trey Kraemer.

At the annual Texas Association of Journalism Educators Fall Fiesta Convention held in October, Kraemer was honored as the 2024 recipient of the accolade.

“The legacy of what he accomplished is evident on each campus,” Ortiz said. “Dedicated journalism teachers are making an impact, and more students than ever in Humble ISD are practicing real-world skills through these publications. I am forever grateful for the impact he has had on my life and to the students in our district, and I am so proud that he is being honored this year as Administrator of the Year.”

In 2009, when Kraemer was serving as the first principal of Summer Creek High School, he hired Ortiz to be the school’s first journalism teacher. After serving in this role, Kraemer moved on to become the Humble ISD Assistant Superintendent of High Schools and retired from that role in June of 2024. Kraemer spent 34 years in public education.
