AVID Overview
AVID: Advancement Via Individual Determination
AVID is a global, non-profit college and career readiness system that equips teachers and schools to partner with students in becoming college and career ready. The AVID College Readiness System empowers students to take control of their educational destiny, closes the opportunity gap through access and support, trains educators in research-based methods of effective instruction, and serves as a catalyst for systemic reform and change. AVID's mission is to close the opportunity and achievement gap by preparing all students for college readiness in a global society (AVID's official site).
The AVID Elective
The AVID Elective is a year-long course providing academic and executive function skills in order to assist students in navigating the complexities of advanced coursework and post-secondary preparedness by accelerating academic success. Students enroll in the most rigorous courses available on their home campus, and through the AVID elective, are provided an academic and personal system of support. Each week, students receive instruction that utilizes a rigorous college-preparatory curriculum, tutor-facilitated study groups, motivational activities, and academic success skills.
The AVID elective focuses on the following student outcomes: Student Agency, Rigorous Academic Preparedness, and Opportunity Knowledge.
