Cardinal Library

Cardinals Read 2025

Dear WCE Families,

Last year’s Cardinals Read was a huge success! I am excited to bring this initiative back.

Our Book

Our second annual Cardinals Read book will be Good Different, by Meg Kuyatt. This novel-length story, written in a unique verse format, is a fairly quick read. Novels in verse focus on the reader feeling the emotion the author wants to portray through the musicality of poetry using stanzas and poems to tell one overarching story.

Good Different can be purchased from Amazon using our Smile program here. The paperback version is $8.96.  The Kindle version is $11.99. It is available from the public library and Audible as well. I have nine copies available to borrow in the library. Should you purchase your own copy, the author will sign it when she visits our school.

Speaker

The author, Meg Kuyatt, is scheduled to speak on March 28th to our 3rd-5th graders about her book, her work as a writer, poet, and writing instructor.  I am so excited to bring these offerings to our campus and celebrate Poetry Month in a big way.  I hope every family who chooses to participate enjoys the book and the opportunity to discuss both the fictional character of Saleh, her life and her choices, but the nonfiction components of autism awareness and celebrating the beauty that is being uniquely different.

Writing Workshop

In the library, we will be focusing on poetry in April as we celebrate National Poetry Month.  Our author will kick off this month-long focus with a writing workshop with those students who would like to participate. Participation is voluntary, but we’re very excited about having a professional share their craft and first hand experience. The additional writing workshop will be open to anyone who participates by completing an artifact.

Artifact & Field Trip

Students will have until March 26th to finish the book and create an artifact that represents something important to them from the book. These artifacts will be on display for our author when she visits WCE as well as parents who visit during the Book Fair and the WCE Expo Night on March 27th. The artifact should be homemade. Students will write a paragraph describing their artifact and why they chose it as a part of the expectations for each option listed on the choice board. This artifact will serve as their entry to a final field trip in May- details still being sorted. All students who read the book and submit an artifact to the best of their ability will be invited to participate in the field trip. More information on the field trip, volunteers, and details to come.

Happy Reading,

Mrs. Ali Wood
