The Summer Creek High School Boys Track and Field Team was honored at the Board of Trustees meeting on Tuesday, June 21, for winning the Class 6A State Title at the 2022 UIL state meet. This is the second year in a row the team has earned the honor and the third time in school history.
A number of big wins at this year’s competition helped push the team over the top by scoring 70 overall points.
Troy Kite, Humble ISD Director of UIL Athletics and Fine Arts, credits the team’s philosophy of brotherhood for their repeated success.
Kite explained how winning repeated championships has its own challenges.
“It’s human nature for teammates or coaches to want to become complacent after winning a championship,” Kite said. “But Coach Ervin talks about culture, and how it takes a village to raise a successful program.”
The team set 50 top performances in the nation and earned the nation’s best 4x4 time at 3:09. High school track and field website DyeStat also named the team number one in the nation.
“Winning the title two years in a row puts us in a very exclusive group,” Summer Creek High School Track and Field Coach Shelton Ervin said. “Only a handful of teams have accomplished this feat at this level.”
Ervin, the National Boys and Girls High School Track and Field Coach of the Year, was also honored with the team at the June 21 meeting.
Superintendent Dr. Elizabeth Fagen echoed Kite’s enthusiasm about the team’s accomplishments.
“I am so proud to celebrate the Summer Creek High School State Champion Boys Track and Field Team,” Dr. Fagen said.
Ervin has been coaching at Summer Creek since the school opened in 2009. He’s been with Humble ISD since 2006, having coached multiple sports at Atascocita High School prior to his time at Summer Creek. Before joining Humble ISD, Coach Ervin was a member of the University of Houston Track and Field coaching staff.
