AVID Overview

AVID: Advancement Via Individual Determination
AVID is a global, non-profit college and career readiness system that equips teachers and schools to partner with students in becoming college and career ready. The AVID College Readiness System empowers students to take control of their educational destiny, closes the opportunity gap through access and support, trains educators in research-based methods of effective instruction, and serves as a catalyst for systemic reform and change. AVID's mission is to close the opportunity and achievement gap by preparing all students for college readiness in a global society (AVID's official site).

The AVID Elective
The AVID Elective is a year-long course providing academic and executive function skills in order to assist students in navigating the complexities of advanced coursework and post-secondary preparedness by accelerating academic success. Students enroll in the most rigorous courses available on their home campus, and through the AVID elective, are provided an academic and personal system of support. Each week, students receive instruction that utilizes a rigorous college-preparatory curriculum, tutor-facilitated study groups, motivational activities, and academic success skills.

The AVID elective focuses on the following student outcomes: Student Agency, Rigorous Academic Preparedness, and Opportunity Knowledge.

AVID is an application-based elective, requiring students to complete the multi-step application process through the student's home campus.

As with all things AVID, equity and access are at the forefront of our systems and routines. With that in mind, AVID student selection is completed through a process that includes data analysis, recommendations, self-nomination, applications, and interviews. The systems in place for recruitment aim to remove barriers. AVID campus coordinators recruit at feeder schools as well as on campus. AVID is aligned with Advanced Academics and requires students to enroll in the most rigorous courses provided by the campus. Ultimately, AVID students are on a path to college, and that is reflected through their enrollment in advanced coursework.  AVID is academic acceleration, not remediation. Students are provided a gamut of supports while stretched academically.

One reason the AVID classroom is exceptional is because of the diverse student population you find when visiting- a range of students with varying interests, academic abilities, and backgrounds tied together with a passion and pursuit of elevated academics and personal growth.

Please contact the campus AVID Coordinator for an application: Campus Contacts

Introduction to AVID Tutors

  • Tutors are key to the success of the AVID program. Tutors from area colleges and universities are trained to use specific teaching methodologies and materials to work with AVID students. Tutors work with AVID students in study groups and individually, assisting them in all academic areas to make progress commensurate with college expectations.

  • Tutoring in AVID is different from any job you have held before. Being part of a program at the forefront of education is highly challenging and requires extraordinary commitment, yet its rewards are many. More than anything else, tutoring in AVID is the best preparation possible for a career in teaching or in any other job which is people oriented.

  • AVID tutorials take place in small groups that are subject area specific. AVID tutors assist the students to achieve their full potential by facilitating collaborative tutorial groups. Tutors use Socratic questioning and collaborative learning techniques to help the students come up with the answers to their questions on their own and by working with fellow students.
